WB Animation Maquettes
maquette (ma-ket) n.
A usually small model of an intended work, such as a sculpture
or piece of architecture.
Maquettes are used by animators and artists as references
when creating cartoons. Warner Brothers started producing
these limited-edition maquettes in 1995 for the Batman-Superman
Adventures Animated Series.
The regular edition maquettes came in edition sizes of
2,500. Artist proofs had an edition of 250.
To date, only the original Batman Maquette artist-proof
were released through WB Stores. However, you might be able
to find a "official" Superman and Batman artist
proof on ebay which were given to art houses as references.
You know that they are true artist proofs by the round white
base (Superman) and round black base (Batman) instead of
the normanl logo bases that were made for the WB Stores.
Rumor has it that Harly Quinn proofs were released as well
in limited quantity. Some popped up at collector reception
as surprise items.
Although
the last maquette to be released "Batman: The Dark
Knight" was an edition of 2,500, the last 500 were
never produced so only 2,000 were released.
Since the closing of the WB Stores, several independent sculptures have tried to reproduce the maquettes. You might see one here or there come up on ebay. However WB continues to patrol the auctions to make sure that noone sells these statues. I will post some pics of these maquettes shortly.
